Being able to
see where you want to go is an important
step in building your self-confidence.
We all have dreams and desires. In fact,
we all probably have an idea of what our
ideal life would look like, if we had the
personal resources to just go for it. (The
reality, by the way, is that you probably do
have all the resources you need to get
whatever you want - it's just that you don't
know it yet!)
So this is a short exercise in
imagination in which you can picture what
you might be doing and where you might be if
you were not held back by fears and anxiety,
or by the constraints that other people put
on you in your past - without your
permission!
Suppose you were beamed down into the
body you inhabit with the specific challenge
of improving your own life in any way that
you could. Imagine that you know all of your
own strengths, abilities and skills, but you
have no idea of any supposed weaknesses or
lack of confidence!
Take your imagination and do with it as
you wish.
Imagine that the past counts for nothing
- all that matters is where you are now and
what you are doing or going to do. You can
use all the positive attributes you have,
but you take no account of any negative
thoughts, feelings or behaviors!
Now, speculate about what you would be,
what you would be doing, and who you would
be doing it with. Complete self-confidence
is yours! You can take any opportunity,
It's marvellously freeing, isn't it? To
be able to use your imagination to the full
in this way gives you the power to envision
a future for yourself - that is, to
construct an image of what you might be if
all your hopes and dreams came true and you
weren't bounded by fears and a lack of
self-confidence.
The fantastic thing is that with enough
belief, desire and expectancy, you can
actually make these dreams a reality! Again,
we have another page on the website where
this is covered, but for now, it's a glimpse
of what you could do if you were a newly
confident person.
It's also worth taking a record of what
you come up with in your visualization.
- For example:
What would
be your ideal occupation?
- Where
would you be living?
With whom would you be living?
- What
level of wealth would you have?
In constructing this vision, you may
recall the characteristics of the
self-confident person includes realism. So
make the ideal life you describe something
that you either really passionately
desire or something that you believe you can
achieve. And list these things in as much
detail as possible. This will help you when
you come to read the section on the art of
goal setting.
To be able to see yourself free from the
control of your limiting beliefs is a
powerful step forward on the road to greater
confidence.
